On April 6, 2024, Sharon Howerton was presented with the Thomas D. Bledsoe Award by the Illinois Council of the Blind during its annual convention in Springfield, IL. This award was presented in appreciation of her many years of service (at least 45) to the blind and visually impaired community as a state rehabilitation counselor for the blind and visually impaired (25 years), instructor of beginning braille and other courses with the Hadley School for the Blind (17 years) until retirement and currently continuing to teach braille to adults through Blind Service Chicago (5 years as a volunteer). The plaque contains both print and braille text and was a complete surprise to Sharon.
